Description:
Unasyn is a combination antibiotic containing:
- Ampicillin: A penicillin-class antibiotic that kills bacteria by interfering with their cell wall synthesis.
- Sulbactam: A beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents bacterial enzymes from breaking down ampicillin, thus enhancing its effectiveness.
Each vial contains 1 gram of ampicillin and 0.5 grams of sulbactam, designed for intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration after reconstitution with the appropriate diluent.
Uses:
Unasyn is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
- Respiratory tract infections: Sinusitis, pneumonia, bronchitis.
- Intra-abdominal infections: Peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess.
- Skin and soft tissue infections: Cellulitis, wound infections.
- Gynecological infections: Pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis.
- Urinary tract infections: Cystitis, pyelonephritis.
- Bone and joint infections: Osteomyelitis, septic arthritis.
- Sepsis and bacteremia: Caused by susceptible organisms.
