BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine is used primarily for the prevention of tuberculosis (TB). It is derived from a strain of Mycobacterium bovis, which is closely related to the bacterium that causes TB. The BCG vaccine is commonly administered in countries where tuberculosis is prevalent.
Prevention of Tuberculosis (TB): The BCG vaccine provides protection against tuberculosis, particularly severe forms of the disease such as TB meningitis and miliary TB in children. It is less effective in preventing pulmonary TB in adults but is still widely used in many parts of the world where TB is common.
Bladder Cancer Treatment: In some cases, BCG is also used as an immunotherapy treatment for superficial bladder cancer. It helps stimulate the immune system to attack cancer cells.
