To ensure the medicine reaches your stomach quickly and to avoid irritating your esophagus (throat), you must follow these steps:
First Thing in the Morning: Take the tablet immediately after getting out of bed, before you have had anything to eat or drink.
Water Only: Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of plain water (at least 200ml). Do not use mineral water, sparkling water, coffee, tea, or juice.
Stay Upright: After swallowing the tablet, do not lie down for at least 60 minutes. You must stay fully upright (sitting, standing, or walking) to prevent the tablet from flowing back into the esophagus.
Fast for 60 Minutes: Wait at least one hour before having your first food, drink (other than plain water), or any other medications (including calcium supplements or vitamins).
Esophageal Issues: If you have problems with your esophagus (such as narrowing or difficulty swallowing), you should not take this medication.
Calcium Levels: If you have low blood calcium (hypocalcemia), this must be treated before starting Bonviva.
Dental Health: In rare cases, bisphosphonates can cause "osteonecrosis of the jaw." It is important to maintain good oral hygiene and inform your dentist that you are taking Bonviva before any major dental procedures.
Kidney Health: Not recommended for patients with severe kidney impairment.
