Route: Administered as an Intramuscular (IM) injection, usually into the deltoid muscle of the upper arm.
Annual Timing: The best time to get vaccinated is just before the peak of the flu season (often around September or October), though you can get it at any time during the season.
Immunity Window: It takes approximately two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop the antibodies needed to protect against the virus.
Observation: After the injection, it is standard practice to remain at the pharmacy or clinic for 15 minutes to ensure no immediate allergic reactions occur.
Indicated For: Everyone aged 6 months and older.
High-Priority Groups: Individuals with chronic respiratory conditions (like asthma or COPD), diabetes, heart disease, or those over the age of 65.
Precautions: Inform our pharmacist if you have a severe allergy to eggs (as some vaccines are egg-based) or a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
Current Illness: If you currently have a moderate to severe fever, it is best to wait until you have recovered before getting the shot.
Q: Can the flu shot give me the flu?
A: No. The injected vaccine contains "killed" (inactivated) virus or a single protein from the virus, which cannot cause infection. Some people may feel a mild "malaise" or a low-grade fever for 24 hours as the immune system responds, but this is not the flu.
Q: Why do I need it every year?
A: Two reasons: First, the body’s immune response from vaccination declines over time. Second, the flu virus changes constantly; last year’s vaccine may not protect you against this year’s dominant strains.
Q: Does it protect against the Common Cold or COVID-19?
A: No. The influenza vaccine specifically targets the flu virus. While symptoms can be similar, it does not prevent the common cold or other respiratory viruses.
