1.Shake the inhaler and breathe out fully:Preparation.
Wash your hands. Remove the mouthpiece cap and look inside to make sure it is clean. Shake the inhaler vigorously for 5 seconds, sit up straight, and breathe out naturally through your mouth as much air as you can.
2.Place the mouthpiece between your teeth:The Seal.
Put the inhaler mouthpiece into your mouth between your teeth. Close your lips tightly around it to form an airtight seal. Do not block the spray hole with your tongue.
3.Press down and breathe in slowly and deeply:The Breath.
Start breathing in slowly and smoothly through your mouth. Just as you start to breathe in, press the top of the metal canister down firmly once. Keep breathing in deeply for 3 to 5 seconds to draw the mist deep into your lungs.
4.Hold your breath for 10 seconds and rinse:The Hold.
Take the inhaler out of your mouth. Hold your breath for 10 seconds (or as long as comfortable) to let the medicine settle in your lungs, then breathe out slowly. If using a daily preventer inhaler, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out.
For Rescue Inhalers (Salbutamol HFA): Use 1 or 2 puffs only when you feel sudden chest tightness, wheezing, or right before you exercise.
For Daily Preventer Inhalers (Fluticasone HFA): Take your exact prescribed puffs (usually 2 puffs in the morning and 2 puffs at night) every single day without missing a day, even if your breathing feels perfectly fine.
For Rescue Inhalers: Feeling a brief jittery shake in your hands, a slightly faster heartbeat, or a mild headache for a short time after a puff.
For Preventer Inhalers: A mild hoarse voice, a sore throat, or an uncomfortable dry mouth if you forget to rinse your mouth after your shots.
How do I know when my HFA inhaler is completely empty?
Many modern HFA inhalers have a built-in dose counter window on the side that counts down from 200 to 0. If yours does not have a counter, track your usage dates closely. Do not drop your canister into water to see if it floats. HFA canisters can float even when they are empty, which can cause you to accidentally use an empty inhaler during an emergency.
What should I do if I need to take a second puff of my medicine?
If your doctor tells you to take 2 puffs of your medicine at a time, do not press the canister twice in a row immediately. Wait at least 30 to 60 seconds after your first puff, shake the inhaler again, and then perform your second inhalation step perfectly.
Can I use my blue rescue inhaler every day if my coughing is bad?
If you need to use your blue rescue inhaler 3 or more times a week to stop everyday coughing or wheezing, it means your asthma is not under control. Do not just keep taking more rescue puffs. Contact your doctor to update your daily preventer treatment plan instead.
