Movicol Chocolate is an over-the-counter (OTC) laxative used to treat ongoing constipation and very bad blockages (called fecal impaction) in adults and teenagers.
Just a quick heads-up: Movicol Chocolate does not come as a solid tablet. It is a powder that comes inside small paper packets (sachets) that you mix with water to make a chocolate-flavored drink.
Movicol Chocolate contains a key ingredient called Macrogol 3350, along with essential body salts (electrolytes):
Harnesses Water: Macrogol 3350 is a special compound that holds onto water. When you drink it, it carries water straight into your bowel instead of letting your body absorb it.
Softens Stools: This extra water mixes with hard, dry stools inside your gut, making them soft, bulky, and much easier to pass comfortably.
Protects Balance: It contains matching body salts (sodium and potassium). This stops your body from losing important minerals or getting dehydrated while the laxative works.
Constipation Relief: Helping you return to a regular, comfortable bathroom routine if you have been constipated for a short time or for a very long period.
Fecal Impaction: Clearing out severe, stubborn blockages where hard stool has completely packed the rectum or colon (as confirmed by a doctor).
Intestinal Blockages or Tears: Do not use this medicine if you have a perforation (a hole or tear) in your gut wall, a complete blockage in your intestines, or paralysis of the bowel.
Severe Inflammatory Bowel Illnesses: Avoid if you suffer from severe gut conditions like ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or toxic megacolon.
Strict Low-Salt Diets: Because Movicol contains a high amount of sodium (salt) to protect your mineral balance, talk to your doctor before using it if you are on a strict low-salt diet.
Any Time of Day: You can drink your mixed Movicol at any time, with or without food.
Space Out Other Medicines: Because Movicol flushes through your gut, it can stop other oral medicines from absorbing properly. Do not swallow any other tablets 1 hour before or 1 hour after drinking your Movicol.
1.Pour the powder into a clean glass:The Pour.
Tear open 1 sachet of Movicol Chocolate and empty all the dry powder straight into a drinking glass.
2.Add exactly 125ml of plain water:Water Balance.
Pour 125ml of water (about half a glass) into the powder. Do not mix it into starch-based food thickeners.
3.Stir well until the powder completely dissolves:The Blend.
Stir the mixture thoroughly with a spoon until the liquid looks uniform and slightly hazy, with no dry clumps left at the bottom.
4.Drink the solution and stay hydrated:Ingestion.
Drink the entire glass immediately. Remember to keep drinking plenty of regular fluids throughout the day to support your body's digestion.
For Regular Constipation: Take 1 sachet daily. If needed, you can safely increase this up to 2 or 3 sachets daily, spread out across the day. A standard course usually lasts about 2 weeks.
For Severe Blockages (Faecal Impaction): A doctor must confirm this condition first. The dose is 8 sachets a day, all mixed and consumed within a 6-hour window, for up to 3 days. If you have a heart condition, do not drink more than 2 sachets within a single hour.
As your digestive system gets moving again, you might notice a few mild adjustments early on:
Mild stomach aches, gurgling rumbles, a bloated stomach, or passing wind.
Feeling slightly sick (nausea) or mild vomiting when first starting.
A sore or uncomfortable feeling around your bottom.
Note: If you get watery diarrhea, it simply means your dose is a bit too high. Reduce the number of sachets you take each day, and the diarrhea will stop.
Can I mix the powder in advance if I am traveling?
Yes. You can mix your sachet with water ahead of time. If you cannot drink it straight away, keep the liquid covered inside a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). You must throw away any mixed solution that has not been used within 24 hours.
Is Movicol Chocolate safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
