What Is Tacrolin 0.03% Used For?
Tacrolimus topical is used on the skin to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in patients who have received other medicines that have not worked well. Atopic dermatitis is a skin condition characterised by itching, redness, and inflammation. Tacrolimus helps suppress these symptoms which are caused by the body's immune system.
The 0.03% strength is the only concentration approved for children aged 2 to 15 years. Only tacrolimus ointment 0.03% may be used to treat children in this age group — the 0.1% strength is not appropriate for children under 16.
How to Use Tacrolin 0.03%
Wash your hands before use. Clean the affected area and make sure it is dry. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and rub in gently. Do not apply to healthy skin. Unless you are treating your hands, wash your hands after application. Apply twice daily until symptoms clear. Do not use occlusive dressings, bandages, or wraps over the treated area. Avoid swimming, bathing, or showering immediately after application.
If there is no improvement within 6 weeks, reassess the diagnosis with your doctor. Do not use continuously for prolonged periods without medical review.
⚠️ Important Warnings
Cancer Risk Notice: Long-term safety of Tacrolimus 0.03% ointment is not known. Lymphoma, skin cancer, and other types of cancer have rarely been reported in people treated with this ointment. It is not known if Tacrolimus ointment caused these effects. Do not use continuously for a long time without a break unless specifically directed by your doctor.
Sun Sensitivity: Protect treated skin from real and artificial sunlight during treatment. Do not use sun lamps, tanning beds, or ultraviolet light therapy. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Is Tacrolin 0.03% a steroid? A: No. Tacrolin is a non-steroidal topical calcineurin inhibitor. This is an important distinction — unlike topical corticosteroids, it does not cause skin thinning and is therefore suitable for use on sensitive areas such as the face, eyelids, and skin folds where long-term steroid use is not recommended.
Q: Can I use Tacrolin 0.03% on my child's face? A: Yes, with medical supervision. One of the key advantages of Tacrolimus ointment over topical steroids is that it can be used on facial and sensitive skin areas without the risk of skin atrophy. However, always use only as directed by your child's doctor.
Q: How long before Tacrolin 0.03% starts working? A: Many patients notice reduced itching and redness within the first few days of use. Significant improvement in skin appearance typically occurs within 2 to 6 weeks of consistent twice-daily application.
Q: Can I use moisturiser alongside Tacrolin 0.03%? A: Yes. If your doctor recommends a moisturiser, apply it after the Tacrolin ointment has been absorbed. Do not apply moisturiser immediately before the ointment as this may reduce its effectiveness.
