Tenoric is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) where single-agent therapy has not been sufficient. The Atenolol component blocks the action of adrenaline on the heart, causing it to beat more slowly and with less force. The Chlorthalidone component is a long-acting diuretic that helps the kidneys eliminate extra fluid and sodium, reducing the total volume of blood the heart has to pump. Together, they significantly lower the risk of stroke, heart failure, and kidney problems.
Do not stop taking Tenoric abruptly. Suddenly stopping a beta-blocker can cause a "rebound" effect, leading to chest pain (angina), heart attack, or dangerously high blood pressure. Your doctor will provide a tapering schedule to stop safely. Additionally, inform our pharmacist if you have asthma, a very slow heart rate, or severe kidney disease, as Tenoric may not be suitable for you.
Take one tablet daily, preferably at the same time each morning. Because it contains a diuretic (water pill), taking it in the morning helps prevent your sleep from being interrupted by frequent trips to the bathroom. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food.
Note: Continue taking Tenoric even if you feel well. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, and the medication is working to prevent long-term damage. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if your next dose is less than 8 hours away.
Common side effects include cold hands and feet, tiredness, dizziness, and a slower-than-normal heart rate. Because of the diuretic, you may experience increased thirst or a slight increase in uric acid levels (which can trigger gout in susceptible individuals). In some men, Tenoric may cause temporary changes in sexual function. If you experience wheezing or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tablets in their original blister packaging until use to maintain their chemical stability. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the pack.
